eBay CEO Devin Wenig on Gender Pay Equity

Devin Wenig, eBay President and CEO

Gender pay equity is an important issue for our company, our industry and the economy as a whole.

Being richly diverse is a value that is core to eBay’s culture.  Diversity is also a particularly complex issue.  One component of diversity is ensuring that we pay our people fairly based on their role, contribution and impact - not on other factors unrelated to performance.  Earlier this month, I shared my perspective with our employees on this important issue.

At eBay’s Annual Meeting of Shareholders today, our shareholders voted on a proposal regarding gender pay equity, put forth by a shareholder.  While the proposal did not pass, it garnered significant support.  The views of our shareholders, many of whom are also our employees, are important to me.

So let me reiterate what we believe and what we are doing about it.  Gender pay equity is an important issue for our company, our industry and the economy as a whole.  Prior to receiving this year’s shareholder proposal, eBay had begun a process to conduct a global analysis of gender pay equity.  This analysis, which considers salary, bonus and stock, is currently underway.  We expect to complete our internal review by October 2016.  We will publicly share key findings of our analysis.  Importantly, if we find that we have an issue, we will fix it.

I believe companies and their leadership must address gender pay equity issues intentionally and proactively.  This is why we are taking the steps needed to ensure that gender is not a factor in how our employees are compensated.
